Our Montessori Classroom

As with traditional Montessori classrooms, Montessori del Mar is clean, orderly and inviting. It is not only this way when the children arrive in the morning, but remains this way throughout the day with the help of the students. They take an active role in caring for their classroom with chores, cleanup and overall respect for their surroundings.

The children participate in several “life skills” each day. They clean up after eating, wash dishes, wash tables, dust, wash windows, sweep the floor and many other fun activities. This may not sound fun to the average adult, but unlike adults who focus on the end product of cleaning, children delight in the activity itself.

Montessori “life skills” materials are child sized, yet fully functional. These activities, like the rest of their work, encourage the students to learn through all five senses and not only through the more traditional approach: listening, watching and reading.

April Newsletter

This month, the children are really diving in to some garden work and enjoying the sunny but windy days during recess.

They are learning a few new songs for earth day and working on a new drama presentation with Lorry.

 A few Montessori del Mar students will be appearing in the Gloriana Musical Theatre Production, “Charlotte’s Web,” which opened the first of April and runs through April 17^th. In the classroom, the children are learning about the vital functions and internal organs of vertebrate animals and upper elementary students are studying the timeline of ancient hominids and early humans.

"Holes" by Louis Sachar

A book Review

In the beginning there was this big thing about someone stealing a baseball player's shoes. And as Stanley is walking under a bridge, a pair of shoes fall from the sky. Stanley goes to "Camp Green Lake," and he digs his first hole. He meets Mr. Sir and Mr. Pendanskey. He also meets all the other boys that are there. Zero and Stanley get caught by the warden and they find a box full of diamonds. But the hole they find it in has a yellow spotted lizard in it. Well, I liked it. It was a very good story.

Stanley is walking home from school and some shoes drop on his head. A second later a police pulls him over and sees his shoes. It turns out they are Clyde Livingston's shoes. Zero and Stanley run away and make it to the god's thumb! Zero and Stanley go back and dig one more hole. They find a treasure chest but right as they find it a yellow spotted lizard jump out at them. I loved it. I like how the story goes back and forth in time.

Stanley is in Texas, in Camp Green Lake. Stanley took some shoes that belong to a basketball player. Zero and Stanley ran away from Camp Green Lake. Zero and Stanley are back home. I liked the story because it was good.

The students of Montessori del Mar Learning Center have been busy planting in the garden and anticipating the first signs of Spring. Sharon has been leading the children in great lessons about the study of life on earth from ancient to modern times. Upper elementary students are also studying early man, the fundamental needs of people, and human anatomy. Search for New Montessori Teacher

We are seeking an experienced elementary Montessori guide to teach at our small, parent-run, public charter program beginning August 2012. The candidate must possess a California multiple subject teaching credential or be eligible, and be AMI or AMS certified to work with six through twelve year old children. Experience with public school education, grant writing, and administration desired.

Montessori Del Mar, set on the bluffs of the Pacific ocean, is a parent-run elementary learning center that has been serving the Mendocino coast of California since 2007. Our program offers integrated music and performing arts education, a vibrant parent group, and gives the teachers funding and support to provide authentic Montessori education. Montessori Del Mar currently serves 28 students Kindergarten through 6th grade.

We receive state funding for salary and benefits for teachers, site supervisors, and classroom assistants. Our parent non-profit corporation, Friends of Montessori del Mar funds the facility, materials and supplies, and other miscellaneous expenses. A private 2-6 primary program is attached to the learning center with children moving up to the elementary each fall.

This position provides a unique opportunity to work within a model of school reform. Our students are meeting and exceeding state standards and work at their own individual level. Our teachers enjoy a flexible method of teaching where they have the privilege to create a Montessori program which meets the needs of a small group of dedicated families. Our families are empowered to participate in the daily running of the learning center. Our non-profit fundraising group is run by a volunteer board of directors and works closely with the teachers to provide support of every kind. Our family environment meets the needs of each child academically, socially and spiritually.

Teacher salary is based on experience with a benefit package including medical, dental and vision coverage as well as contribution toward the states teacher retirement fund.
